In the camp

What they do

The projects they work through in the camp, one at a time.

1

A robot that signals

Light and sound first, because a machine that can tell you something is the quickest way to see your code working.

2

A robot hand

Built, then coded to open and close on a button, then wrapped in a loop so it keeps doing it.

3

Motors driven to time and to position

Run for two seconds at seventy-five percent, or move to an exact position and stop there. Two different ideas about control.

4

A smart bike

The transport build: a machine with a job, moved forward by a function they wrote.

5

A final robot of their own

Built in pairs, with the week's components and the week's code.

The concepts behind it

What they are actually learning

The camp is the reason they turn up. These are the ideas they use to do it, shown the way they meet them, and they are the same ideas behind any programming language they pick up later.

Sequencing and syntax

hub.light_matrix.write("Hello")hub.speaker.beep(600, 1000)

Typed instructions in order, and the rules about how to type them. A capital W instead of a lowercase one is the difference between a working program and an error.

Functions and parameters

define move_forward()run both motorscall move_forward()beep(600, 1000) - pitch, length

A named block of reusable code, and the values you pass into it. Change a parameter and the same function does something different.

Loops

while True:if button pressed:open the handclose the hand

Without a loop the hand opens once. With one it keeps answering the button, which is what makes it a machine rather than a demonstration.

Debugging

read the consolefind the red linefix, run, repeat

Bugs are expected and the console is where you look. Pair programming means one ninja drives and the other watches for them.

What they leave with

By the end of camp

Taken from the camp's own curriculum, not written for this page.

  • Learned about engineering
  • Learned how to navigate and use the LEGO® SPIKE app
  • Learned how to use motors and sensors
  • Created robots to accomplish simple tasks

After camp

Loved our camp? Keep building all year.

Robotics is the school-year robotics program, where a ninja works through four kits across the year. The first session is free, so they can try it before you decide.

Before you ask

Common questions

Is this LEGO or is it coding?

Both. They build with LEGO Education SPIKE hardware and then write the code that makes it do something - the building is not the end of the task.

What is pair programming?

Two ninjas, one keyboard. One drives and one navigates, and they swap. It is how professional teams work and it is much better than one child watching another.

Do we need a kit at home?

No. Every brick, motor and hub is here and stays here.

How is it different from LEGO Python Coding?

Same hardware, different depth. This one is the engineering week; LEGO Python spends it on the Python language itself.
