Minecraft Modding Camp for Kids in Frisco, TX

Your child has played Minecraft for hundreds of hours. This is the week they start building it: their own blocks, equipment and mobs, programmed in MCreator and built into a mod that runs.

In the camp

What they do

The projects they work through in the camp, one at a time.

1

A monster of their own design

Drawn on paper first, then built: how it looks, how it behaves, and what it takes to beat it.

2

Custom blocks and equipment

New blocks and gear built to stand up to that monster, each with properties they programmed themselves.

3

Textures they drew

The artwork on every block and item is their own, pixel by pixel, rather than a preset.

4

An installable mod file

Exported on the last day, so it runs in their own copy of Minecraft Java Edition at home.

The concepts behind it

What they are actually learning

The camp is the reason they turn up. These are the ideas they use to do it, shown the way they meet them, and they are the same ideas behind any programming language they pick up later.

Variables

when the block is placedset charge to 0change charge by 1

A value the block remembers while the game runs, so it can keep track of its own state.

Conditionals

if charge > 3explode with power 4otherwiseplay sound fizz

If this is true do one thing, otherwise do another. It is what makes a block or a mob react.

Events

when a player is nearmake the mob chasewhen the mob is hitdrop 2 of their ore

Code that runs the moment something happens, rather than in order from the top.

Procedures

define glow and damageset light level 14hurt the player 1use glow and damage

Name a piece of behavior once, then reuse it on every item that needs it instead of rebuilding it each time.

What they leave with

By the end of camp

Taken from the camp's own curriculum, not written for this page.

  • Designed a powerful monster
  • Created their own blocks and equipment to defeat it
  • Learned programming skills to give objects unique properties
  • Expressed their creativity by making their own textures
  • Created unique Minecraft modifications

After camp

Loved our camp? Keep building all year.

Create is our core coding program, where a ninja builds real games in JavaScript and works up through the belts. The first session is free, so they can try it before you decide.

Common questions

Does my child need to code already?

No. MCreator uses code blocks, so a ninja builds real logic without typing syntax. Knowing Minecraft helps far more than knowing code.

Do we need to own Minecraft?

Not for the camp; everything runs on our machines. To play the mod at home they need Minecraft Java Edition on their own computer.

Is this just playing Minecraft all week?

No. They are in MCreator building the mod for most of the day, and in Minecraft to test what they built.
